There is nothing like the late autumn and early winter for keen photographers to grab that atmospheric West Cornwall photo. The disused engine houses which litter the landscape contrast so readily with the breathtaking views and cliffs. Its almost overwhelming at times but always stunning.
Turn left out of the front door to walk down Cot Valley and you will pass a handful of these characters in a field. They share fields with sheep which all adds to the peaceful and beautiful nature of the whole area. The lane is bounded on each side by stone walls covered in vegetation both in winter and summer.
On almost any walk in West Cornwall you will see the remains of Cornish engine houses. Some are more complete than others but all add an atmosphere to the landscape that is unique. Their silouette is a reminder of an important era in Cornish history when tin mining was at it’s peak. Today they add to the already incredible views wherever you find yourself. We love them.
We recently visited the Cornish Seal exhibition at the Jackson Foundation Gallery in St Just. We can’t recommend it enough. Kurt Jackson’s artwork inspired by the grey seals so often seen around West Cornwall was mesmerising. Followed up by lunch at the Dog & Rabbit. Is there a better way to spend the day?
A stormy view towards the Brisons in March. We have had more than our fare share of westerly gales here over winter but it does make the sea and sky look so specatcular. Walking in to the wind can be quite challenging at times, but finding a sheltered spot and admiring the view makes it all worthwhile.
It doesn’t look real but holding steady enough in the wind made for an interesting almost painting like photo. These seabirds seem undaunted by the gale blowing and the very large wave coming in behind them. They just edge up the beach a little every now and then. We had the whole place to ourselves. One of the advantages of coming to Cornwall in the winter and although it was a bit breezy we had very mild weather.
Cornwall enjoys a very mild climate which means you can be on the beach in winter every day. OK you won’t be sunbathing but you can enjoy some spectacular walks. Watch the surfing or just sit and take in the air, its up to you.
Whether it is cream or jam first a cream tea is always delicious. And where better to enjoy it than with a spectacular Cornish view.
It’s not just people who enjoy the seaside. Be it going for a paddle, a swim or surfing there is nothing as enjoyable. The panoramic views and roar of the sea make beaches so invigorating. We like this beach in particular which stretches a long way from Hayle Beach in one continous stretch of sand and dunes.
Heather and gorse cling to the steep cliffs in West Cornwall creating a fabulously vibrant display of colour. The coast path out of Porth Nanven cuts straight through this magnificent display. A lovely place to unwind with a gentle evening evening walk.
